Mongolia at a glance

Mongolia, a country that borders only two countries, Russia and China, is situated in the heart of Central Asia. It has a continental climate that varies on average from -30C in the winter to +30C in the summer. With a land area of almost 3 times that of France and a population of only 2.7 million people, the country has the lowest population density in the world (not counting Greenland).  Well over one third of the population resides in the capital city, Ulaanbaatar. It is one of the youngest nations in the world with around 60% of the total population under the age of 30.  Mongolia successfully made a peaceful transformation from a former socialist system to a multi-party democratic system during the early 1990s.  In 2009, the country had elected its fourth president, Ts. Elbegdorj. The country is blessed with generous amounts of mineral deposits ranging from gold, silver, copper, molybdenum, iron and uranium to fluorspar, phosphorus, lead, zinc and tungsten. Recently, the Oyu Tolgoi Project, considered the largest undeveloped copper, gold deposit in the world, is attracting worldwide attention to Mongolia.
